Here in Iowa, we have a rich history of farming, and our landscape is dotted with old, majestic barns, some built by hand, by farmers long ago. The phrase “they don’t build ’em like they used to” really applies here. They were built using thick-cut, solid lumber whose quality is even sometimes hard to find these days. Much of this barn wood comes from original stands of old-growth timber with over 100 years of Mother Nature’s hand crafting it into the perfect character and quality for our products.
Unfortunately, these old barns eventually reach the end of their lives and need to be torn down. That’s where Randy comes in. Randy travels across Iowa dismantling these old barns for their owners, and instead of throwing away this wonderful lumber, he takes the best pieces, cleans them up, and prepares them to be re-purposed into beautiful keepsakes and crafts. We really enjoy knowing that we are helping to recycle these great materials in an environmentally friendly way that preserves a piece of our American history.
This wood has the added benefit of being aged and seasoned. This means it will hold its shape better over time as it has been dried and cured over time. One of the neatest qualities of this old wood is its appearance. Many times it has been weathered and painted over many times which gives it a beautiful, aged look and feel. Wherever we can, we try to preserve this weathered look so each piece has its own unique character that can be enjoyed for years to come.
When you buy one of these products from us, not only are you getting a handmade piece of art, you are also capturing a little piece of Iowa history.
We hope you and your customers appreciate this aspect of our products. It gives us much pride and satisfaction and we hope it allows our products to stand out with an extra depth of character that is hard to achieve with an automated assembly line. We are proud to pass along this added quality to our wholesale partners and their end customers. We stand behind our products and welcome comments, questions and feedback.
